Open-air cinema 2017 – cinematic highlights at FOUR
• Freiluftkino Frankfurt festival a resounding success
• Exceptional atmosphere on former Deutsche Bank site
• Further events planned
Frankfurt, 07/08/2017
Almost 5,000 visitors, fourteen films and a one week extension: that’s the result of this year’s open air cinema festival, “Freiluftkino Frankfurt”. From 6 July to 5 August, the organisers of the Lichter Filmkultur club and Daniel Brettschneider from the Hafenkino cinema in Offenbach showed an ambitious selection of films – from the musical hit “La La Land” to the documentary “Ghostland” – in the courtyard of the former Deutsche Bank site. The area had been closed to the public for almost half a century and is now being used again because a radical change is imminent: by 2022, the Frankfurt-based project developer Groß & Partner will build the high-rise complex FOUR, which will combine living, working and leisure spaces. Various events, such as the open-air cinema, will open the location to the people of Frankfurt well before the planned completion.
Good mood despite the so-so weather
“Captain Fantastic” was supposed to open the “Season 4@FOUR” – but then heavy rain prevented the opening ceremony from going ahead. The organisers did not let the unsettled weather spoil their mood; they kept the film fans up to date, arranged alternative dates and organised additional events: the “FOUR Tops in pics” photo competition invited participants to submit their most beautiful panorama photos of the venue. Eight couples dressed to impress competed in a twist competition at the showing of the cult film Pulp Fiction.
The secret star: the location
The visitors, which included Eintracht coach Nico Kovač and the former city councillor Sarah Sorge, loved both the programme and the venue: “Great films and a wonderful atmosphere here”, was one of the comments on the open-air cinema’s Facebook page. One visitor enthused: “It was wonderful to sit in the middle of the skyline on a warm summer evening.” And festival director Gregor Maria Schubert also loved the open-air cinema‘s special backdrop: “The former Deutsche Bank site, now the FOUR project area, is one of the most beautiful cinema experiences I have ever had – a top class cinematic production!” The festival ended on Saturday with the American melodrama “Manchester by the Sea”. Various event highlights will follow in the FOUR area in the coming weeks: starting in mid-September, a pop-up restaurant will open in Junghofstraße (which will be there for several months), and the international exhibition “B3 – Biennale of the Moving Image” will be showcased in November.
